Outsourcing Not the Big Savings Firms Expect, Study Says
The recession is pushing businesses to cut the cost of their software portfolios, but most companies overestimate the savings that offshoring can deliver, according to Compass Management Consulting.
Companies rushing to outsource their software development for quick savings actually risk significant losses in productivity because developers do not fully understand business requirements, according to the consultants.
While staff costs may be 40 percent lower in offshore locations, Compass research found these savings were undermined by a 60 percent drop in productivity in operations where the full lifecycle of application development has been outsourced.
"This means that the decision to migrate development, when you include additional management control, increased infrastructure spend, employee attrition, language, and cultural issues, can end up costing up to 20 percent more than current in-house operations," said the consultant group.
Compass analysed over 200 outsourcing contracts, accounting for a total value of more than £3bn over the past two years.
Many organisations are already replacing legacy systems and updating applications to reduce costs, said Nigel Hughes, a consultant at Compass. "Complexity of the application environment is a major driver of overall cost escalation in IT, and 2009 is the best chance since the year 2000 issue to make radical change."
Staff attrition related to moving application development to offshore locations, particularly the loss of functional expertise, will have having a "negative effect" on productivity.
"With lower productivity in many offshore locations and currency movements that are working against UK buyers, it is important to outsource the right type of development project and ensure that business analysis skills are kept in-house in order to make any savings," said Hughes.
"More than 70 percent of a typical software budget is spent on maintaining legacy systems. Top performers are clear that they cannot run a 21st century operation supported by 20th century technology," said Hughes.
But Compass said that rationalising software estates by consolidating applications could reduce spend by 20 to 40 percent within less than a year.
Compass advised companies to keep strategic applications in-house, and look at outsourcing "non-strategic, non-critical and low complexity applications".
"For the strategic, complex and business critical applications, it makes more sense to retain the analysis skills that will drive the innovation and value in-house," said Hughes.

Retailers trim supply chains as demand, sales dip in India
Stung by poor consumer demand and falling sales, Indian retail chains are tightening their supply chain and logistics. Major players like Future Group,
RPG Retail and Shopper’s Stop have kicked off multiple initiatives like automating processes, working closely with vendors to bring down waste and implementing automatic just-in-time stock replenishment systems, and are seeking ways to reduce costs on warehousing and transportation.
Retailers expect such initiatives will improve cash flows and reflect positively on their bottomline. “These are times when retailers have become very prudent. At one level, some are increasing collaborations with vendors and suppliers to bring down waste, overall stock levels and increase speed to market. Retailers are also tying up with logistic supply providers to bring down their cost on dedicated space and transport lines,” said Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO, Retailers Association of India (RAI).
India’s largest retailer, Future Group, has shut down around 20 smaller warehouses to consolidate into bigger ones spread over 2-2.5 lakh sq ft. It is partnering with vendors in the garments and general merchandise segments to reduce inventory holding and distribution points. The company has also initiated talks with transport operators to configure trucks and route networks to optimise the process.
“Through all these initiatives, we have managed to reduce costs associated with the supply chain by 0.5-4% of total sales across retail formats. All such initiatives have reduced our warehousing and transportation costs. We are also automating our entire process,” said Anshuman Singh, CEO of Future Logistics, a group company that handles supply chain for all stores.
Shopper’s Stop CEO and executive director Govind Shrikhande said the company is exploring options for joint planning with vendors to improve supply chain. “A tight supply chain, no doubt, helps to improve cash flows in tough times like now,” he said.
According to RAI, retailers like Future Group, RPG Retail and Shopper’s Stop are among those that are investing in IT to make their supply chains more nimble. “It’s taken us some 12-14 months to implement SAP. The investment on such ERP implementation has been around Rs 20-25 crore,” RPG Retail president and CEO Sumantra Banerjee said.
RPG Retail and Shopper’s Stop have also enabled automatic replenishment system, which enables them to track stock movement on a store level. RPG Retail has further tied up with vendors to enable direct supply to some of their big Spencer’s stores, instead of a warehouse, to cut costs.

Akses Premium Rapidshare Gratis
Rapidshare[dot]de, situs penyedia layanan upload dan free download file, alternatif bagi para netter yang ingin tukar-menukar file. Cukup gunakan fasilitas upload berbasis web yang telah disediakan, catat alamat url file anda dan
anda bisa mendownloadnya dari manapun lain waktu atau bagikan alamat url tersebut ke teman-teman anda jika anda ingin mereka juga “menikmati” file yang telah anda upload.
Ada 2 account yang ditawarkan oleh Rapidshare, yaitu Premium account dan Free Account. Masalahnya adalah pada Free account. User akan terganggu dengan adanya counter time. Counter time ini biasanya bisa mencapai lebih dari 1 menit. Jadi, rapidshare akan membuat anda menunggu selama kurang lebih satu menit sebelum menunjukkan url file yang nada minta. Huh.. cukup menyita waktu bukan?
Masalah kedua adalah Rapidshare akan mencatat alamat IP anda dan memberikan batasan untuk melakukan download.
Masalah ketiga, manusia selalu saja merasa kurang puas. Ketika dia sudah mendapatkan akses yang setara dengan premium account, dia akan berfikir, “gimana yach biar gue benr-bener dapet premium account”. Okay, di artikel ini juga saya akan mewujudkan impian itu.
